Quartet History

Stringsaloud String Quartet was formed in 2005 by violinist Mairi Hunter-Barr (Sales & Events Manager for the quartet). Mairi and Gillian Gracie (violinist) graduated from the BA (Hons) Applied Music degree at Strathclyde University both specialising in performance and business.

Morag Currie (violist) and Rosamude Preston (cellist) graduated with post graduate degrees from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama after graduating from Napier University and Manchester University respectively. Mairi and Gillian attended orchestras (and busked together) from a young age, both coming from the Southside of Glagow orginally and met Morag Currie on a teacher training course in Colourstrings in London. Rosamunde Preston and Gillian had worked frequently playing in a number of different quartets together before Gillian recommended Roz to Mairi as our cellist.

Mairi Hunter-Barr – Violin

Mairi manages the quartet as a business and arranges all new music for the quartet along with performing in the quartet and teaching. Along with her musical experience, Mairi is an extremely keen events manager with enthusiastic attention to detail and has a great knowledge and network of wedding suppliers and venues in Scotland.

Gillian Gracie – Violin

Gillian is our lead violinist, an extremely versatile player who can switch from Classical, Jazz and pop styles. Gillian has performed with Scottish singer/songwriter Eoghan Colgan at the O2 Arena in London. Gillian also teaches for West Dumbartonshire instrumental music service.

Morag Currie – Viola

Morag is not only a fabulous viola player, she is also an accomplished Scottish fiddler, regularly performing at ceilidhs and venues in Glasgow with various bands. Morag has also performed with Eoghan Colgan and Biffy Clyro on their December 2008 UK tour. She also teaches violin and viola.

Rosamunde Preston – Cello

Rosamunde, our cellist is very much cherished by the quartet as she not only provides extremely funky bass lines for pop and jazz numbers but has an amazing classical tone, again an extremely versatile player. Rosamunde also teaches cello and performs with the Ardstrath Piano Trio for “Live Music Now” performing chamber recitals throughout the UK.

what they say
"I would like to say a huge thank you to Stringsaloud for the beautiful music they provided on my wedding day. Hearing the music I had chosen drifting across the room as we signed the register or walking out as man and wife with moonriver playing are very special memories for me. I have also received a number of compliments from guests on the wonderful music played by the girls. Stringsaloud added a further romantic touch to what was already a wonderful day.
Thank you again"
